In Ephesians, God's word tells us how much he desires us, he knew us before creation and blessed us with a great inheritance. Yet in the very next chapter of Ephesians, it is made clear that we are not holy or blameless on our own (not of ourselves).
He chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
Ephesians 1:4
By grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is a gift from God -- not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
